Poconos

Stranger in a Strange Land

The Poconos enter the story as the destination of a planned refuge: Ben Caxton intends to take Valentine Michael Smith to Jubal Harshaw’s home there if he succeeds in getting Smith out of Bethesda. The location matters as a place beyond the immediate reach of the authorities, where Harshaw’s public standing and combative independence could make Smith harder to conceal or recapture.

Proposed Refuge

Ben describes Harshaw as widely known, a physician and lawyer, and an individualist willing to challenge the Federation Department of Security. Those qualities make the Poconos home more than a private hideaway in his plan: its owner’s visibility and readiness to fight would help frustrate another attempt to keep Smith hidden. Ben expects to add his own newspaper column to Harshaw’s opposition, turning the proposed refuge into the basis of a public counterattack.

Place in the Escape Plan

The plan is conditional. Ben first has to get Smith out of Bethesda; only then would he take him to Harshaw’s place in the Poconos. The passage establishes the destination and the intended protection, but does not yet show Smith arriving there. Jill, although she has agreed to stay out of Ben’s proposed attempt to see Smith, prepares to be nearby in case he needs reinforcement, placing the Poconos plan within a wider effort to secure Smith’s escape.
